Blankenheim Castle towers above the town. From there you have a wonderful view over the nooks and alleyways of the historic town. In the center of the village, in the cellar vaults of a half-timbered house dating back to 1762, is the source of the Ahr.

• Hike on the Eifelsteig | 17.7 km

Barren and yet rich in plants and insects. The dry, warm soil of the Kalkeifel has created very special landscapes. Early in the spring, primroses bloom in pale yellow, in summer over 20 species of orchid unfurl their flowers. Juniper columns tower in between.

• Hike on the Eifelsteig | 26.1 km

The view of the open landscape reveals the first glimpses of the volcanic landscape of the Eifel. Half of the route is marked by an interesting natural monument: the Dreimühlen waterfall was created in 1912 during the construction of the Dümpelfeld - Lissendorf railroad line. Since then, the waterfall has grown by around 10 cm every year.

From the thriller capital of Hillesheim through the Bolsdorf valley up to the Rother Kopf volcano. Lava flows shaped the landscape here. Before reaching Gerolstein, another element was at work: the towering rocks of the Gerolstein Dolomites were once a coral reef. At the Helenenbrunnen fountain in Gerolstein, you can taste how the carbon dioxide of volcanic origin combines with mineral water.
