Hike the Eifelsteig in shorter stages from Monschau-Mützenich to Steinfeld Abbey
From the magnificent half-timbered houses of Monschau to the venerable Steinfeld Abbey , the Eifelsteig covers a total of 64 kilometers—and offers you eight days of respite in the forested Northern Eifel. Over a total of seven stages ranging from 7 to 13 kilometers in length, you’ll hike through a landscape that’s still a bit wild and seems as though it’s been left behind by modern times.
The hiking vacation begins in Monschau with its picturesque half-timbered alleys and the imposing castle that towers over it all. On a discovery tour through the old town, let yourself be charmed by the small workshops, little shops, and cafés. You’ll be perfectly set in the mood for the fascinating landscape that lies just outside Monschau. In the Mützenisch district, you’ll follow in the footsteps of Emperor Charlemagne. He pitched his tents in the Hohe Venn on the outskirts of what is now the village—bizarre rock formations in the moor bear witness to this.
You’ll hike through the Eifel National Park and learn more about the Vogelsang International Peace Park (IP). For here, on the windswept broom-covered heights, a dark chapter of history was once written—yet today it’s a destination for nature lovers and culture enthusiasts. Nestled in this landscape lies the winding Rursee with its clear water and countless coves. The Eifelsteig journey through time takes you to your destination: the more than 900-year-old Steinfeld Monastery. Here you’ll feel the spirituality of the Salvatorian Order.
In between lies a week during which you’ll feel free from the daily grind. Your hosts will take care of your meals and handle your luggage transfers for you.
According to the legend, Emperor Charles the Great had become lost in the High Fens during a hunting excursion near his residence in Aachen and was forced to spend the night on this large quartzite rock. The rock, near the town of Mützenich, situated immediately on the German-Belgian border, is still quite commonly referred to as: Kaiser Karl’s Bettstatt.
