Green and inconspicuous in everyday life, crucial in emergencies.

The extreme weather events in July 2021 led to severe flooding in large parts of the Eifel, including around Roetgen. Roads, houses, and entire town centers were submerged. This flood demonstrated how important retention areas can be. Where streams are too narrowly confined, the risk for downstream areas increases.

Retention basins create buffers: they absorb water during heavy rainfall and thereby slow down the flood. In Roetgen, such "green basins" are intended to be designed in harmony with the landscape. In everyday life, they remain untouched; only during high water do they fill up in a controlled manner – an example of how technical flood protection and nature can work together.

Through suitable locations and gentle interventions, not only safety is created, but also habitats for plants and animals. This is how foresight and prevention work – not against the stream, but together with it.
