Was ist eigentlich Galmei? – der Schatz unter unseren Füßen

Stolberg

Open today

What was once a sought-after material is now the foundation of a unique ecosystem.

Galmei – also known as zinc ore – was for centuries the most important raw material for the production of brass. Without galmei, there is no brass; without brass, there is no economic boom in Stolberg.

Today, however, the mineral is not of interest for its economic value but for its effects: Its components shape the soil and create the foundation for a very special flora.

Thus, this ore connects two sides of history – mining and nature, industry and biodiversity.

Tip for hikers: When hiking, pay attention to the bright, stony soils along the path. You will hardly find solid galmei here, but its traces still shape the underground. Where the earth is sparse, dry, and rich in minerals, the realm of galmei plants begins.
