Wittlich
Martin Simon’s story illustrates how a career at Goodyear in Wittlich can unfold: He started there as an apprentice, and now, as an industrial engineer, he is the plant manager. A look at the job openings at the Goodyear site shows that the company is seeking additional skilled workers and managers, as well as apprentices and production employees… good news for technical talent in economically challenging times. But Goodyear is rising to these very challenges and sees its conveniently located Wittlich site as a particular asset. With more than 220 different products, this plant specializes in industrial tires for trucks, construction machinery, and buses; in retreading; in off-the-road tires; and in supplying rubber compounds to other plants. This makes it independent of an automotive market driven solely by private demand. “In Wittlich, we have very good capacity utilization and are not only in a stable position but are also expanding,” says Martin Simon, describing the current situation. Already, 900 people have found future-oriented jobs here. That number can and should grow even further.
Certification by the EIFEL regional brand is a clear sign of this. At the same time, Goodyear’s internationally oriented corporate strategy forms the backdrop. “Our managers and workforce identify strongly with Wittlich,” says Martin Simon, commenting on the successful balance between global thinking and down-to-earth action on the ground. “This may also stem from the long history of our local plant. The connection between the city and high-quality tire manufacturing has thus grown very strong.” As a result, the company’s philosophy aligns perfectly with the values represented by the EIFEL employer brand. “The brand also helps us find suitable skilled workers and apprentices; it raises our profile in the region and demonstrates the appreciation we have for our employees.” This not only results in a pleasant working environment but also translates into tangible benefits.
The benefits are measurable and include—in addition to collective bargaining agreements, vacation pay, Christmas bonuses, and subsidies for cafeteria meals—elements that promote physical and mental well-being. The employee suggestion program encourages creativity and boosts self-confidence, while the workplace health management program—with continuous improvements in ergonomics and workplace safety—ensures a healthy workday. “We place great value on a bright work environment with a positive atmosphere, especially in production.” The 37.5-hour workweek for full-time employees promotes a healthy work-life balance; in administrative roles, flexible work schedules and working from home are also available.
