Endless Hiking Across the High Fens
What a hiker’s delight! Two days of hiking on the newly opened (certified as a Leading Quality Trail Best of Europe) Fens Trilogy through eastern Belgium, followed by the adventurous crossing of the High Fens. To round it off, two days of hiking on the classic premium trail Eifelsteig. Well, are you getting excited to hike yet?
From the tri-border point on the Vaalserberg in the venerable Limburg Reichswald, you’ll hike through the former mini-state or “artificial state” of Neutral Moresnet. Marvel at this historical curiosity that lasted more than a century, beginning with the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Enjoy the lush green hedgerow landscape along the Göhl River, past the “Emmaburg”—the mighty railway viaduct spanning the Göhl—the moated castles in your first overnight stop in Eynatten, and the enchanting pottery village of Raeren . Then the historic textile-making metropolis of Eupen—capital and seat of government of Belgium’s German-speaking Community—welcomes you. Let your gaze wander eastward from the Upper Town. You’ll be hiking along this green ridge! You’ll follow the Hill upstream with its amber-colored water. You’ll climb through a wild valley up to Haus Ternell and conquer—uphill and downhill—the ridge of the Brackvenn. The trail winds its way, partly along wooden boardwalks, to the invisible German-Belgian border. Here you’ll join the Eifelsteig and head through the Monschau Heckenland toward the medieval town of Monschau. Refreshed by a good meal, you’ll then begin a two-day hike along the Eifelsteig to Kornelimünster, just outside the gates of Aachen—the cathedral city and final resting place of Emperor Charlemagne. First, the “Eifel-Blick” viewpoint from the 658-meter-high Steling beckons. Once again, you’ll experience the vastness of a primeval landscape dating back millennia, encounter the history of the Reinartz farms, and spend the night in Roetgen. The final stage shines with the lake-like Dreilägerbach Dam and, as you pass through the Struffelt Heath, once again evokes the unique atmosphere of the high moor. Shortly after the Itertal Viaduct, the historic old town of Aachen-Kornelimünster, your final destination, comes into view.
Our tip: Round out your hiking trip with a guided tour of Aachen’s historic old town. Let yourself be guided through narrow alleys and across historic squares on a journey through Aachen’s 2,000-year-old history. We’d be happy to reserve discounted tickets for you to join a public old town tour upon request.
