Hiking the Eifelsteig in shorter stages from Blankenheim to Gerolstein

Over the approximately 60 kilometers from Blankenheim to the “city of springs,” Gerolstein, you can enjoy a week of leisurely hikes—with daily distances of 9 to 14 kilometers that won’t be too much for anyone. Here, your feet almost always touch ground that was once a warm tropical sea with numerous reefs during the Devonian period. Stromatoporoids—an extinct, sponge-like group of animals—and corals were its architects. Today, limestone rich in fossils bears witness to this prehistoric era. Thousands of years later, the Celts and Romans settled here, long after the land had risen to become one of the most picturesque parts of the Eifel.

You’ll start in Blankenheim, a town known for its half-timbered houses and castles, and witness a unique feature of the Eifel: the Ahr River springs from the center of the town, right beneath a house. Nature and culture are one.

From the banks of the Ahr, the trail leads up to the unique juniper landscape, which stretches from Alendorf to Wiesbaum like a “Tuscany of the Eifel” with its fragrant flora. Sweeping views and a chapel lined with pure gold on the inside await you along the way. Hillesheim , surrounded by a walkable city wall and known as the capital of German-language regional crime novels, will tempt you to take a break at Café Sherlock. And finally, you ’ll arrive in Gerolstein . The town is famous not only for its mineral water but also for its spectacular rocky backdrop of vertically towering dolomite cliffs. Perched high above are Kasselburg Castle with its eagle and wolf park, as well as the remains of a Celtic-Roman sanctuary. It is dedicated to Caiva, a matriarchal deity.
