Vichtbach – vom Lebensraum zur Naturgewalt

Stolberg

Open today
The Vicht often appears peaceful – clear, cool, animated by water thrushes, dragonflies, and ferns. However, it has been a lifeline for the region for centuries. Its water powered mills and forges, flowed through ditches, and shaped the villages along the stream for centuries.

But extreme rainfall events are increasing. Then, even a small stream can quickly become a roaring river. In July 2021, the Vicht overflowed: roads and houses were destroyed, livelihoods threatened.

This shows: Water bodies need space, meanders, and floodplains, instead of narrow canals and hard banks. Renaturations, retention areas, and smart planning can mitigate risks. Thus, the Vicht remains both: a habitat and a risk.
