Straßenaufschluss Mulartshütte/Venwegen – ein tropisches Flachmeer
Stolberg
Close your eyes – maybe you can hear the gentle rustling of a sea. Between Mulartshütte and Venwegen, there was actually a tropical shallow sea over 400 million years ago. Fine layers of sludge and clay particles settled on the bottom there.
Over time, these deposits solidified into clay stones and preserved small remains of ancient sea creatures: shells, brachiopods, and trilobites – animals with hard shells, but without a backbone.
At the same time, the first plants began to take root on land. Their roots were still in the water, but they were about to change the earth.
Tip for little and big explorers: Pay attention to the fine layers in the rock – each tells a moment when dust, sand, or life settled. A silent memory of the sea that once lay here.
