Stolberg
The impressive former mining landscape of the Schlangenberg can be reached via the Stolberg district of Breinigerberg. The nature reserve is characterized by mining relics such as trenches, pits and slag heaps, the origins of which date back to Celtic and Roman times. However, although man left behind an industrial landscape after the end of mining and smelting operations towards the end of the 19th century, a unique variety of flowers unfolds there for many months every year. The area consists of an exciting mixture of open spaces, varied woodland areas and the eponymous Schlangenberg, which offers a sweeping view over the Voreifelland.
During the vegetation period between May and October, the grasslands are home to a unique flora, consisting of galmei violets, grass carnations, crossflowers, spring chickweed, ragwort, various types of orchid and many other species. An extensive system of paths opens up the protected area. Please observe the rules about keeping dogs on a lead in the nature reserve and help us to preserve this unique natural landscape that is in need of protection.
