Ich bin ein alter Baumstumpf – und ich bin nicht allein!

Am I just an old tree stump? Look closely. I am a real home for many animals!

What looks like a piece of dead wood to you is a valuable habitat for many animals. In my rotten wood, beetle larvae develop, under my bark salamanders hide, and bats sleep in my cavities.

Fungi love me too: they slowly decompose me and transform me into fertile soil. Thus, I help ensure that the forest continues to live on. For from fresh soil, something new grows again.

Become a forest researcher: Find a tree stump near you and look closely. Do you discover small holes, fungi, or ant trails? How many species do you find that renew the forest? But be careful! Look only with your eyes – please do not break or turn anything over, so the animals remain safe.
