Ich bin der Galmeizwerg
Stolberg
Hello, I am the Galmei dwarf. I may seem small and inconspicuous, but my story reaches deep into the ground.
In the past, people searched for Galmei here – an ore they needed for brass. Galmei hides well. It is found in the rock and often looks quite unremarkable. Those who wanted to find the ore had to look at the ground very closely and investigate: Where is the ground particularly bright? Where is it dry and stony? And where do only very special plants grow?
Today, no Galmei is mined anymore. But sometimes the path still shows how carefully one had to look to discover it.
Detective's insight: Take a close look at the ground along the path. Do you spot places that are particularly light, dry, or rocky? Those are spots where Galmei was found in the ground in the past. Show them to your family and discuss together what people might have needed Galmei for in the past. And please leave the stones where they are so that others can also enjoy them and become nature researchers.
