The Niederburg, first mentioned in a document in 1173, was always owned by the Manderscheider dynasty of counts. Here you can get a hands-on experience of the Middle Ages! Especially at the annual "Historical Ford Festival" on the last weekend in August.

Tithes and monastery barns already existed in the early Middle Ages. They served as warehouses for the acceptance and storage of the natural tax, the "tithe". In Lüxem, the Counts of Manderscheid, among others, acted as bailiffs for the Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier and collected the tithes for the monks.

Set in a dramatic landscape of woods interspersed with water, the Eifel National Park will allow you to experience the fascinating natural diversity of a wilderness at first hand. For in this large protection area some 65 kilometres southwest of Cologne, nature has been left once more to its own eternal cycle of growth and decay.

The former school building in Mützenich is now home to the "Uraalt Scholl" village museum.
