Erste Sägewerke in Zweifall – der Klang der Maschinen im Wald
Stolberg
With the end of the charcoal era, a new time began: the industrial wood processing era. A time that not only shaped Zweifall but also changed it.
When the first spruce stands around Zweifall were ready for harvest, numerous sawmills emerged starting in the mid-19th century. Initially powered by water, later by steam and electricity. The new machines allowed for faster processing, larger quantities, and more diverse products.
The steady humming of the saws and the pounding of the saw frames characterized everyday life in Zweifall: The forest became a workplace, wood became an economic factor. This changed not only the place but also the lives of many people.
Today, only a few businesses are still active. However, at the museum sawmill at the Forsthaus Zweifall, one can still experience firsthand the role that wood, labor, and technology played in the history of the area.
