Gerolstein

The ruins of the medieval Löwenburg castle lie high above the fountain town of Gerolstein. Gerhard VI von Blankenheim (1314 - 50) is thought to have given his name to Gerhardstein Castle, now known as Löwenburg. The castle was destroyed during the Palatinate War of Succession in 1691 and never rebuilt. Today, the 11 m high shield wall and the remains of residential buildings are reminders of its former importance as a seat of power. The castle ruins are freely accessible all year round and offer a wonderful view over Gerolstein, the Dolomite massif and the Kyll valley.

Tip: The Löwenburg castle ruins are just a few meters away from the Eifelsteig trail and the Vulkaneifelpfad Celtic trail. A short detour to the historic walls rewards you with a beautiful panoramic view.
