Gaze into the still, dark waters of the Dauner Maare. They seem bottomless. Many legends surround these lakes. Can you make out the outlines of an old, sunken castle in the Weinfelder Maar? Emerge from the world of fantasy, feel the primal power of the earth within you—millions of years of evolution are visible in the maars today. Refreshed, you continue on your way, up to the Dronketurm. And if you haven’t heard them before, you’ll see them now: The goats in the meadows surrounding the Weinfelder Maar. And no—they aren’t bleating. They’re telling you the story of the volcanoes.
Leave the fiery past behind you. The magic of the Lieser Valley awaits you. Persistently, the river has carved its way through the rock. Follow its twists and turns. The water continues to ripple, but now it’s the Kyll that accompanies you. The terrain becomes rockier. The Butzerbach carves its way through the rock. Use the wide stones to reach the other bank without getting your feet wet. Venture onto the suspension bridges in the Butzerbach Valley. Breathe in the pine-scented air—the pines will guide you along the path above the Moselle to your destination: the Roman city of Trier.

This tour is available year-round. The best time to travel is from April through November. During the winter months, weather conditions may cause restrictions. You should also take the shorter days into account when planning your stage lengths.
