Discover the region’s cultural and scenic highlights along the Eifelsteig and its partner trails in the north
This circular hike (approx. 80 km) features selected day-long stages along the Rur-Olef Route, the Castle Route, the Eifel Springs Trail, and sections of the Eifelsteig, leading you to the region’s scenic and cultural highlights.
In the Eifel National Park, the “Eifelsteig” hiking trail winds through impressive natural landscapes: colorful mixed forests alternate with vast meadows and fields; rivers like the Urft and Olef wind through the valleys like dark blue ribbons; and from the heights, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. Excellent loop trails—the Eifelsteig’s partner trails to the north—lead even deeper into the tranquility and, in some places, the unspoiled wilderness of the Eifel National Park. In addition to experiencing nature, be sure to allow enough time to visit the sights along the trails. For example, the Castle Route , for example, invites you on a medieval journey through the Eifel National Park: Wildenburg Castle near Hellenthal, the Reifferscheid Castle ruins in Reifferscheid, and historic Blankenheim —with its castle, the Tiergarten Tunnel, and the source of the Ahr—are practically right along the way. A visit to the Eifel Nature Center in Nettersheim is also highly recommended. Here, you can learn all about the flora, fauna, history, and the lives of the people in the Eifel region. The Eifelsteig stage from Urft to Gemünd takes you along “quiet trails” through colorful mixed forests and up to the Kuckucksley lookout point—truly a highlight of the hike with an impressive panoramic view of the Eifel National Park.
Incidentally, this hiking trip is also well-suited for a vacation with your dog, as the participating hotels welcome pets.
